    “Amazing Reading”

I’ve always been a big fan of Robert Ludlum’s books. The Jason Bourne books were amongst my favourites. So I was really excited to find out that I had won this book in a Goodreads First Reads Giveaway. I liked how Jason Bourne was portrayed in this book. Jason still has not recovered all of his memory and the bits that come to him add to confuse him. A memorable quote ”A man with no memory isn’t difficult to lie to. In fact, Bourne reflected, it was probably fun to lie to an amnesiac and watch his reactions.”The bad guys are exceptionally heinous. There is lots of violence and some particularly nasty torture. There was an incredibly nasty scene involving a shark and another with battery acid. The Bourne Objective is a fun book to read. There is a lot of action, suspense, and explosions. Suspend belief and enjoy!

The Bourne Objective is the eighth novel in the Bourne series and fifth by Eric Van Lustbader. The book was released on June 1, 2010, as a sequel to The Bourne Deception. This novel continues very shortly after the end of Deception, with Bourne in a race against his nemesis, Leonid Arkadin, to unlock the potential mystery of King Solomon’s Gold, while fighting Russian mercenaries, assassins sent by the U.S. government, and confronting a mysterious organization that threatens to take over and run the world.

Keeping Bourne alive, this book is part of a series in which Bourne and a recurring cast of characters both good and bad go round and round with plans of chaos, murder, and mayhem on a global scale with the characters sometimes aiding, sometimes inhibiting Bourne’s journey of reintegration and foiling the bad guys. This is not a bad thing; a common cast through the series helps tie them all together. There is plenty of action, lots of detail and thud and blunder, it’s just not Ludlum writing. There is something very hard to define about Ludlum’s style, maybe more detail, maybe more getting into characters’ heads, I dunno. Still, there is a lot to like about the series and I have them all (I think.)

Having read the last two books featuring Bourne’s “evil twin” Leonid Arkadin, I expected a nice end to the explosive trilogy…and I was not disappointed. A little hard to follow at first, the book picks up almost immediately. If you are a Bourne fan and do not mind that Mr. Lustbader has taken over the famous series, you will not be disappointed. I give it a 4/5, and excitedly wait for the presumed next novel, The Bourne Reality.

The CIA creator of Treadstone hunts the two top graduates, American Jason Bourne and Russian Leonid Arkadin. The inventor needs to know first hand what failed in the fail safe Treadstone program so the error can be rectified and a new generation of super skilled cold killers can be created. Once the mission accomplished, Treadstone wants each to kill the other. Bourne and Arkadin stalk one another even while the former gains possession of a ring coveted by a secret cabal, Severus Domna, who believe the jewelry leads to King Solomon’s gold; a major step for their achieving their goal of world control. Meanwhile Bourne continues his personal hunt to learn who he was while Treadstone, Servus Domna and Arkadin focus on his death. Although at times inane, readers will enjoy this fast-paced conspiracy thriller as two major webs converge on Bourne as well as Arkadin. Loaded with action, fans will anticipate a showdown between the two Treadstone grads as each understands the world has room for only one and if their “mentor and the cabal have their way: none.
